To define yourself in terms of your human limitations is a desecration of the image of God within you.

My first thought? Women need more respect for their bodies. Second? The WORLD needs to respect women.

How am I doing on the New Years resolutions?
1. Doing great on the less coke/sweet tea. Turns out if you don’t buy coke or make sweet tea, then you don’t drink it! Still working on keeping my water consumption up every day.
2. I still can’t touch my toes. I’m not stretching like I should. At all. Epic. Fail.
3. Since I’m not stretching, I can’t run. My IT-band is still royally effed up and it’s my own fault.
4. I’m doing pretty awesome with saving money, but not a great job of budgeting the money in my checking account. le sigh.
5. Publishing… getting geared up for conferences and am happy about the projects I have in the works. Will submit a paper for publication by April 15.
6. See #3. No running, no races.
So, three months into the year and I’m not happy with my progress. Can I be better/faster/stronger? Yes, I can. The only thing stopping me is me. Even though that is totally depressing (who wants to be their own worst enemy?), I know I can overcome myself and make good choices.
I have a list of goals on my fridge as well… one of them is to blog more frequently. Perhaps if I have to keep writing that I’m slacking on my goals, that will be additionally motivation to reach them?!
So, what will I accomplish today? I will go to the pool and get a good workout and a stretch session in at 1p. I will draft the paper that’s due on Monday. And I will take an hour for myself to do some non-academic reading.

I am quite the fan of new years resolutions… here are mine for 2011:
1. Drink less coke/sweet tea. My mom and I have made a pact to only drink sweet tea on Fridays. I’m a Southern girl at heart, so wish me luck on this one! I’m pretty good at drinking water but it seems like I can down sweet tea or coke by the gallon…I am in need of some moderation.
2. Touch my toes. Even though I’m a runner and did gymnastics for almost 10 years, I have never been able to bend over and touch my toes! Improving my overall flexibility is also a goal.
3. Run 50 miles a week. This is my most lofty goal, so I’ve broken it into parts. The first step is to work up to 7 mile runs throughout the week, then add miles throughout the year. I tend to have issues with my IT-band, but I’m optimistic that by increasing the miles slowly, I’ll be able to get there. I’ve also scheduled weekly cross-training on the bike and in the pool, which I am super excited about!
4. BUDGET! This year I want to make Dave Ramsey proud (see daveramsey.com)! I’ve probably made thirty budgets in the past five years and I’ve never kept one for more than 2-3 months. The one thing I remember is that I always had more money when I stuck to my budget. Being in graduate school is not a cheap endeavor; I’d like to be as responsible with my finances as I am about my schoolwork.
5. Get published. Ok, maybe this is my most loft goal! Part of being an academic is getting your work published in scholarly journals. I’ve been super gun-shy about submitting my scholarship for publication, but if I don’t submit it then it surely won’t get published. My goal is to submit three pieces for publication and see what happens. I’ll keep you posted.
6. Races? For the past two years I’ve been all about competing in local road races, mostly 5ks. I’ll run my first half-marathon on Saturday (MS Blues Marathon and Half in Jackson) and I’m considering another later in the spring. With longer races, I’m running for the love of running; I run shorter races with the goal of placing in my age group. I think for at least the first semester of 2011, I’m going to focus on mileage and overall fitness and maybe pick up racing again in the fall.
So… what are your new years resolutions? Reaching a goal is much more likely if you write them down and tell someone your intentions. :)
